Introduction to the Committee and the Topic:

We live in an era of rapid urbanization. It is estimated that more than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas. On the one hand, human migration has played an essential role in shaping and developing the city. Increasing and diversified migrants have not only promoted the process of urbanization, but also brought many possibilities to the growth of the city. In turn, the rapid urbanization and immigration boom have also brought many opportunities and challenges to immigrants, communities and city managers.

On the other hand, the expansion of cities also accompanies with the poverty issue, which is particularly prominent in megacities. A significant amount of urban poor has been long remaining in ‘Squatter Settlement,’ ends up in unsafe living conditions and often lacks basic infrastructures such as housing, water and sanitation.

UN-HABITAT, as a UN agency responsible for human settlements, has been long working to build a better human community. This year’s conference will be held at the governing council level. The goal of this Committee is to build sustainable cities and communities to jointly promote immigration governance and urban management in the process of urbanization and to explore new ways to respond to poverty issues in urban areas.
